Wine-growing areas in Austria includes the Lower Austria or also known as Niederösterreich, Styria and Burgenland. On the bottle labels, you can normally see the ratings from certified quality wine, to table wine and wine of quality. The three key words are: Tafelwein for table wine, Qualitätswein for wine of quality, and Prädikatswein for “certified” quality wine. As for the Lower Austria Wine Region, it has less rain, so you can find Wachau with its primary wine Riesling, Grüner Veltliner, Chardonnay or Feinburgunder, and Gelber Muskateller with big and bold tastes.


Burgenland and Steiermark

The shallow Neusiedler Lake which is on the Hungarian border produces some dry white wines and a few quality reds. The climate is great for production of exotic yet sweet wines over what is called ‘noble rot’. Besides this part of Austria is a great recreational area with a famous bird sanctuary and a cultural landscape. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For traveling, visit the Vintner’s villages for not just its wine. In summer, Rust or Mörbisch are possibly good choices as there is a Mörbisch Festival and you can easily get there by car from Vienna. In case you do not know, the Mörbisch Festival is on the Lake in the month of July from the 15th. It is one of the most beautiful operetta festival in Europe. The next region is Steiermark which is the Styrian Wine region with rolling hills and patchwork vineyards. The southern Styria or Südsteiermark, are common with one good recommendation being the Gewürztraminer.

Wien or Vienna Wien Region

Other than Vienna, the Vienna Woods, you can find wine taverns with good wine, good food and music. These must visit are Heurigans and also the Heiligenkreuz Abbey in the southern part. The latter is a Cistercian monastery and one of the second oldest in the world.

In Vienna, there is a wine tasting event called the Viennese Wine Prize happening from the 27th June til the 29th of June. This event is for visitors to taste 100 gold prize-winning Viennese wines at the Arkadenhof of City Hall. You can find Vienna Gemischter Satz, Grüner Veltliner, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, St. Laurent, Cuvée Red, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc.
