In the town of Salzburg-Umgebung, a place called Seekirchen is one of the oldest Austrian settlement which is still existing today. Five thousand years ago, the early inhabitants of about ten thousand settled down here. In vicinity to Seekirchen is the largest lake in Salzburg Lake District. Its name is Wallersee with an area of six square kilometers. Wallern are catfish, but it does not mean it is catfish or anything related. It was called Wallersee for ‘Walchen’ means stranger in the central german. It was so called because the locals there had regarded anyone including alpine people mingling with Romans are ‘Walche’, thus its name. Wenger Moor is a national protected area with protected animals and birds on the reeds on the bank. You can find pewits, herons, ducks, curlews, great creasted grebes, pheasants, jays, coots, black-headed gulls and swans! For fishes, you can find many types like the bream, carp, tench, catfish, pike and eels. Obertrumer See is better described as the largest amongst the three Trumer lakes. For this part, it is recommended to walk the trails from Metten to St. Wolfgang and through village of Seeham am Obertrumer.
