Eisenerz is and old fair and mining town in Styria, Austria. It is located in the deep Erzbach Valley surrounded by extraordinary mountains that look like giant shields that protect the city. Every mountain is a fountain of energy and surprises. In Eisenerz, the landscape becomes a passion.

People who visited this beautiful city can not decide if the mountains are more beautiful in summer or winter, so come here in all four seasons. Diverse landscape includes a mountain lake, sunny hills and other special scenery waiting to be explored.

Eisenerz is a city where mining has been an integral part of the place for almost 1300 years,therefor it has its cultural and social roots in the customs and traditions of the miners. This can be seen everywhere: when you take a walk in the old mine or with the Hauly, which is the largest yellow cab in the world,  when you participate at cultural events or the “Erzberg Rodeo”, a spectacular international sport competition.

The Erzberg mine

At the end of the last century, the Erzberg, which in free translation means “Mountain of Ore” supplied the area with an ore has been mined liked rock, outdoors during the summer months, which led to the creation of a deep impressive pyramid. There is historical evidence that mines have been worked there since 712. During summer workforce of the mines reaches 2,000 to 3,000 people and about 1,000-1,500 people in winter, extracting 800,000 tons of iron annually. During the Second World War, there has been a subsidiary of the Mauthausen concentration camp, providing manpower to the local industry – mining.

Tourist attractions in Eisenerz

Although the city of Eisenerz is avoided by most of the tourists that choose Austria as a holiday destination, there are so many interesting things to see and experience, this place can live up to many of the traditional attractions of the region. Here is an interesting example of a fortified medieval church named after St. Oswald, a Gothic edifice founded by Rudolf of Habsburg in the 13th century and rebuilt in the 16th century. Also worth visiting City Museum, the Schichtturm Tower, the Krippenmuseum, the Historical Town and the Frauenmauerhöhle Cave. A few kilometers to north –west from Eisenerz lies the the Castle of Leopoldstein and nearby the beautiful Leopoldsteinersee (Lake Leopoldsteiner). This cold and clear mountain lake with its dark green water lies at a height of 618 meters, surrounded on all sides by high peaks. It is rather small and has a depth of 30 meters.
