Mountaineering or mountain climbing is to some just simply hiking and skiing. However, others took it up as a sport, even a hobby and for those who excels in it, it is a profession. The access, mountain protection, safety aspects and medical about ice climbing are governed by the UIAA or the Union Internationale des Associations d’Alpinisme.

Expedition or Alpine Climbing

Expedition climbing uses multiple trips. So from camps to higher camps, several trips are made. The group sizes are larger hence more supplies are needed to be carried. In order to avoid danger, there are fixed lines to help continually moving from camps to camps. Usually, supplemental oxygen is used and frequently used. Safety comes first, so the food, equipment, time and the waiting out time for storms at high camps has a higher margin. Expedition climbing can be dangerous due to the high altitudes where there are possibilities of being trapped in the storms. Also it will force the group to descend in treacherous avalanche conditions when the weather turns really bad and unpredictable. Besides rockfall and avalanches, there are more exposure to the objective hazards, thus the travel times become much slower. It is basically more expensive to do expedition climbing and the time scale to do so is longer.

Since climbers for alpine climbing only pass the route once, there is no need to continually go up and down between camps for the supplies. Fewer personnel are required for alpine climbing and the style ascents do not leave the climber being exposed to objective hazards. Less time for the acclimatization in this case and usually supplemental oxygen is not required. There is the same danger of being trapped in storms at high altitude for alpine climbing. Climbers are also potentially exposed to HAPE OR HACE. The capital expenditures are lower than expedition climbing and the time scale is much shorter too.

Ice Avalanches

This is a hazard in the glaciated mountain ranges. Whenever there is a collapse of unstable ice blocks from overhanging part of the glacier or a steep slope, ice avalanches begins to travel and it can carry on for longer distances.
